The Indian Super League (ISL) is the top level league in the Indian football system for men's professional football. The All India Football Federation and their business partners, Football Sports Development Limited, are putting up the event. It is officially known as the Hero Indian Super League because of its sponsorship links with Hero MotoCorp. There are presently 11 teams in the league. The tournament season usually lasts from November through March. During the league stage of the competition, each club competes in a round-robin format against all other clubs. The team with the most points at the end of the league stage is crowned Premiers and awarded the League Winners Shield trophy, while the top four clubs qualify for the play-offs. The ISL Final determines the Champions, who are honored with the ISL Trophy at the end of the season.
The competition was established on October 21, 2013, with the goal of expanding football in India and improving its visibility. The league begins with eight clubs in October of 2014. The competition ran without formal authorization from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the sport's regulatory body in Asia, for the first three seasons. The tournament used the same format as the Indian Main League, the country's premier Twenty20 franchise-based cricket tournament. Matches were contested every day during the three-month season, which ran from October to December. Prior to the 2017–18 season, the league had grown to ten teams, stretched its calendar to six months, and received AFC recognition.
Since the league's inception, four teams have been crowned champions: ATK (3), Chennaiyin (2), Bengaluru (1), and Mumbai City (1). (1). Both Goa and Mumbai City have won the League Winners Shield once since its inception in the 2019–20 season.

Changes from last season

The Executive Committee of the All India Football Federation voted to introduce the 3+1 rule in the I-League and debated applying it in the Super League from the 2021–22 season forward.  In response to the AIFF Executive Committee's recommendations, FSDL has announced significant modifications to player registration and the amount of foreign players in the team, which will be in effect from the 2021 to 2022 Indian Super League season. The adjustments were established with the AFC Club competition regulations in mind, which follow the 3+1 foreign player limit, and to offer domestic players in the league more opportunities. Following were the modifications:

  • A team can now sign a maximum of six foreign players and a minimum of four, with at least one player from an AFC member country.
  • At any given time during a match, a maximum of four foreigners can be on the pitch.
  • The clubs must have a minimum of seven Indian players on the field at all times due to a reduction in foreign player numbers from five to four.
  • Within the League-approved classifications, a team can also sign a foreign marquee player.
  • Clubs should boost the number of development players they recruit from the current minimum of two to four, with two of them remaining in the match-day squad.
  • A club's squad size is limited to 35 players, including at least three registered goalkeepers. An injury substitute for an Indian player might also be found at a club (outside of the max. 35 registered players).
  • For season 2021–22, the squad salary cap stands at Rs. 16.5 crore (US$2.2 million).
